In my opinion, the TKO600 is the way to go, that beast would handle your 502 with ease, also note that you wont have all the difficulties that I had since you'll start with a manual 4 speed.

T-56 Magnum behind my 496 BBC. 700 ft lb rating, 5th and 6th overdrive.
Quicktime has a conversion bellhousing for the LS spec transmission behind a traditional Chevy engine. Hurst Driveline had a modified QT bellhousing and the parts (throwout bearing sleeve) to allow a mechanical clutch linkage. Had to modify the crossmember (used a BowTie Overdrives T56 unit with slight mods), 1310 billet yoke with removable caps, and custom driveshaft. Used a 73-81 T56 Camaro shifter, rotated the stick part 180 degrees and it fit the stock console perfectly (already had a large center hole from earlier Tremec 3550 swap).
I have the version with 2.66 first and .8/.62 overdrive. Works great with my 3.73 12 bolt rear.

The transmission that SteveG75 has would be best. I'd prefer the 2.66 first over the 2.87 of the TKO600. Also, with the TR6060 that is in my Camaro, it pulls strong in 5th (.84) but not so much in 6th (.57). I don't have any miles on my TKO600 yet, but I wish I had gone with the T56 Magnum as 5th in the 600 seems like it will only be a highway gear.

I'm sorry to hear about your smoked tranny. There definitely was a reason, why the General offered the M22. Driving behind you was and always will be an out of sight experience. I hope you will get everything done by next spring. Have you detected my own posting here on the Tech/Performance subforum yet ? I'm planning to stick to my M21. It should survive because I drive like Miss Daisys Chauffeur.

I have a 78 which originally came with an auto, so I had to cut the floorboard regardless. I ran a hydraulic clutch release assembly. Soooo, I pretty much did everything I would have had to to do install a T56.
That said, the T56 shifts better, does have the extra gear and would have come in at the same price or possibly lower. Speedometer output would have been an issue, but not unsolvable.
The lower geared T56 (like in a GTO) would have probably been the better choice for my personal setup. As for torque capacity, 400lb-ft +, depends on the source application. A T56 magnum comes in at 700LB-FT.

If you didnt beef up the rear ,that will eventually go up too,its weaker the the trans,just sayin,ive been through two ,on my third rear.when ever i get some extra money i will get my rear beefed up.I also got me a tko600 for my car and it is really nice.

I have a Ramadei Super 10 Bolt, which I think will work with my driving style. Don't want to go to a 12 Bolt if I can help it.

I installed my T-56 Magnum about 2 years ago and LOVE it. I have about 7000 miles and it has been flawless. It changed the whole characteristics of the car. I am running 4.56 gears along with 30 inch rear tires and in 6th gear, it cruises nicely at 70 mph and a little over 2200 rpm. It's fully synco'ed. very strong, shifts like a dream, very positive and has no issues shifting at 6800 rpm. I can't remember ever missing a shift with this thing.
The beauty about the 6 speed is 5th gear is like an "in-between gear". With the camshaft I'm running, the engine is not at its "happiest" at low rpm's. With a TKO, 5th gear would be much too overdriven to use at anything other than interstate speeds (some surging at anything under about 1800 rpm). I use 5th gear in what I call "back road" speeds, 45-60mph. 6th gear is for the interstate; 60+ mph. 5th gear is .80 ratio and 6th is .63. This setup gives me the best of both worlds; incredable launches with the 4.56 gears and real nice interstate cruising with fairly low rpms.

I will take the TKO 600 (0.64) Kit from Keisler.
Reasons:
- want a complete kit and want it asap
- dont want to cut the floor or crossmember, it has to be not to hard to install
- the 0,64 OD will be very good for the 502 at our usual speeds in germany (70-100mph)
I will see if the 1st will be too short. Somewhen I will have to upgrade the rear end anyway.

Have you looked at the Keisler site for installation instructions? There is a way to install the TKO600 without pulling the engine or cutting the crossmember, but I'm not sure anyone would call it "easy".
When I bought the TKO, I had a Richmond 5 speed in the car. I had installed that tranny with the engine/clutch/bellhousing as a unit. That Richmond was too big to pull back over the crossmember to get the input shaft out of the bellhousing. I didn't want to pull the engine again for a tranny change, so I cut my crossmember.

I am close to order a TKO 600 now.
Keisler wrote me, that I would have to wait 6 weeks until they ship.
(While two guys who deal more often with them just told me, that Keisler often need much longer than promissed)
Shipping to Germany comes additional 6 weeks. So 3 months in total minimum.
Now I found a very similar Kit from Ampperformance:

Here the LUK clutch kit is included, what makes it cheaper than Keisler.
If I want to have the Centerforce, then I have to pay 200$ more.
They can ship within 2-3 days.

Have already cleared this point, it´s the 0.64 OD (the one I want).
And he says, that it can be installed without removing the engine and the shifter is removeable during installation, like the Keisler is.

There may be a video on doing this installation. I've seen instructions for it with the engine in the car and you'll need a way to turn the flywheel while you're doing it. Getting the tool that grabs the flywheel teeth to turn it would beat getting out from under the car a bunch of times to turn it from the balancer end. I don't remember this exactly, but you start with the flywheel on, place the clutch/disc/bellhousing on the flywheel side and the tranny on the crossmember side with all these parts somehow supported and forming a loose shallow Vee shape with the input shaft in the bellhousing opening. You hold the bellhousing away from the flywheel and one bolt at a time, you bolt the pressure plate on to the flywheel. This is where you have to be turning the flywheel to go from bolt to bolt on the pressure plate. I figured I'd need 2 midgets and an octopus to hold all these things in position and I quit reading at that point. It is possible, but this is why I said it wasn't easy.

Talk to keisler the SS700 fixes the shifting flaws of the 500 and 600. You have something else to drive get the 700.

of course I have a daily driver. But at the moment it seems that had to wait at least 9 months until I would get the SS700. Thats just not acceptable. It would be no problem if the C3 could drive and the SS700 would be only an upgrade. But at the moment I cant even drive out of my garage - I need a quick replacement. And if the TKO 600 is better than the M21 Im fine with it.
