Default 82 Rear Question

Is it safe to run 4:11 gears in a stock 82 rear for racing?

what do you mean by safe? do you mean will the car be more prone to something breaking? Than the answer would be yes but the stock 82 doesnt have that much power to start with. As you start making changes to produce more power than you will have to make improvements to other driveline components. You do realize that the 4:11 makes the car ridiculous for any highway driving?

OK maybe i should give a little more background. This is not the stock engine, new 383 with 430HP. Car will only run at the drags. Now does 12.5 with 3.55 gears trying to acheive 12.0. I'm just wondering if the stock rear will hold up with 4.11s

From what I understand.....the answer is no........the 80-81-82 rears are not as strong as the previous years. You would need a rebuild, and I don't even know if a rebuild of that rear would substain drag racing activities. You may be better off getting a pre 80 rear and working with that.....
Send Mike (tracdogg2) a PM, he would have all of the answers you need...................Tom

Tracdogg2 built my '81. He can make the rear end survive depending on how thick your wallet is. How much money is that .5 second worth?
