Default Gear Selection Indicator - 1975 automatic

I'm told that the 1975 model had a pointer within the shifter console upper trim plate that indicated the gear selection (immediately to the right of the automatic gear selector). I've looked for a picture or part number but have yet to find that nugget of information. Is what I've been told correct and, if so, where might I find what I need to restore what once was and should still be?

Have you removed the console plate and checked to see if the original part is dislodged inside and can be reused?

Yes, I've removed the whole console and there's no sign of anything that might have been there.

That's where my investigation takes me as well. May well be the ground truth...

No indicator on my 74 and no evidence that there ever was one.

My '76 looks like it should have one but it doesn't.

Thanks all - would appear that there never was an indicator (for whatever reason).
