Default Need help wiring 4-pin style coil

I purchased and installed the Holley Terminator EFI and was more or less happy with it. I was not satisfied that I could not control the timing (although it has these capabilities) so I bought the ECU controlled distributor much like the ones you find on 82-mid 90's GM cars. I also had to buy the 4 pin style coil. When I hooked it up the coil got very hot then started smoking. I took the coil back and got another one.

Here is how I had it wired the first time:

The Black connector was hooked directly to the module on the distributor.

The gray connector has 2 gray wires, one is larger than the other. I hooked the large gray wire to 12V +, then hooked the smaller gray wire to ground.

What did I do wrong?

That connector would be 1-wire to switched 12V and the other wire is for the tach. Don't ground it.

Which one though? The bigger gray goes to switched 12V and the smaller gray to tach?

Thanks.

I would think it would be reasonably easy to ohm out the connections to see which wire does what. Have you tried that?

There is no need to now. I wired it according to the lionel's post and it fired right up. Big gray went to 12V + and small gray left unhooked for now.

Now I can control the timing at idle, cruise, and wot by just adjusting the parameters in the handheld which is pretty trick..

Thanks!!

Good to hear you're running. I would've had to look it up but you could have tried either way. The logical way to test is the larger wire for power. I know I've crossed them before without damage but it just doesn't start so you were safe to experiment.
