I went to Carfax to get a history on my car and when I put in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) I got the following message:
the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)you entered, 1Z8749S416043, is invalid. Please check the number for accuracy and try again below.
The letters "I", "O" and "Q" never appear in a VIN.
The VIN must be exactly 17 characters in length.
The CARFAX database contains information for cars manufactured from 1981 through the present.
Does anyone know where I can get the history for my car and am I missing something on my VIN and if so, where do I find the right one? :flag
CarFax only works for 1981 and newer models. Older vehicles had fewer digits in the VIN so you have it right. A history may be obtainable by doing a title search through the local DMV office if you know the state (s) the car was previously titled in.
My 81 has only 16 on the DMV papers ...?? But the car has 17. So what will I get from the DMV when I tell them they made a mistake!! Maybe I will take the blame and keep from making them mad. Ya, good idea. Thanks.
How can I do the title search, what is the procedure? Do you think it is possible to do the title search for a car which was registered to California couple of years ago, but is now in Finland, Europe? And how much will that cost?
Contact the local DMV office in the state you susoect the car was titled in. Mine was originally from NJ. A quick call to the state office (found the number through the internet, but a Forum member in that state should work too) and had them send me the proper form. They will disclose personal information, so you sign a disclaimer that prevents use or sharing of that information. The search cost me $10.50.
Unfortunately, NJ only kept records from the mid 80's and mine was last registered in 1978 (and I knew that owner). Basically wasted $10.50, but the risk was worth it.
I have to believe, liing in London years ago and knowing the record keeping in Europe, that you SHOULD be able to get a similar search option. I would kep with the arm of the government that oversees automobile imports.
Would be nice to have my cars history.....can't find it in carfax, mine was imported in Holland in 1993.
I have the original warranty papers with the car,on wich is the name of the previous/first owner, apparently a lady from Florida.I wonder if there is a way to look her up on the internet, something like the white pages?
