Default 76 l-48 transmission

I recently purchased a 1976 L48. The car engine is being pulled so that I can increase the horsepower, somewhere between 300hp and 400hp. Since the numbers are currently matching I would like to keep it a numbers matching car. The car is a 4 speed but it is not the Muncie. If I increase the horsepower am I going to have to change the current transmission or can I simply rebuild the current one. Also, can I upgrade the suspension without it affecting the numbers matching? Thanks in advance for any help.

I guess it depends on what you intend to do with the car after it has the horse power increase. For street driving the transmission if it is in good shape should be fine. Numbers matching is something that is highly subjective. The fact that you are already making changes to the engine effect it's collectibility to some people while others may not care. So making changes to the suspension is of no consequence.

Curious what type M20 4 spd was put in your L48 from factory , was it a Saginaw ? since it was a L48 , it would not have a Warner M21 Super T 10.

Was a Saginaw 4 speed the base M20 four speed that year.?

If its a Saginaw M20 .....yup its got to go.

If memory serves, the last year for a Muncie in a C3 was the 74 model year. Your car should have a Saginaw.

My '76 L-48 came from the factory with a ST-10. Transmission number matches all other numbers on the car.

Case is stamped Borg/Warner (B/W).

If the trannie is a Warner Super T 10. , then. FOr 300 -400 hp , it should work fine.

Put a performance gear in the rear
