Default Speedo Cable

My speedo needle is jumping around at lower speeds. Can I disconnet and pull the cable out without disconnecting the shift linkage? I haven't been under the car to look myself. Other problem solving suggestions are more than welcome.

I think the cable has to come out from the end closest to the speedometer. The shifter linkage has nothing to do with it. Are you changing out the whole thing (cable and sleeve) or just trying to lube the cable itself? Either way, on a car without cruise control, the driver's side instruments have to come out. I don't think you can do it otherwise but others will correct me if that isn't he case. On my '80, I have to take out the speedometer cluster to get to it.

The cable will come out from the transmission end. I wanted to know if I had to remove the any or all of the linkage for access to the cable connection. I'll have to get my lazy self under the car a look.

It's very easy at the transmission, but the gauge is bit of a knuckler. It comes off easy enough by pushing the little tab and pulling it off. But getting back there is a pita.

You will have to, at the least, take out the screws holding the speedo and tach in place and ease it partway out of the dash.
