hey guys so my 1982 starts up fine and everything but once i get to 25 mph the car stop accelerating and instead the rpm's increase. but when im at a stop and floor it, the car will accelerate all the way to 85 with no problem. then sometimes when it will stop accelerating at 45 mph and just the rpm's rise. it seems as if it doesn't want to change gears even though its an automatic. please any advice or suggestions?
my mechanic told me the tranny fluid was fine but i guess i should probably change anyway since the car has been sitting for a while. and the car has only 36,000 miles. and also what is the TV cable?
the TV cable affect the pressure inside the 700r4 tranny you have .it is connected to throttle linkage that the gas pedal cable is connected to.if it is out of adjustment the pressure applied to the clutch packs inside can be off .
While I have never had a 700R4 transmission they are not much different the the TH350 and TH400 trannies I have had. The bands in the tranny will dry out if not used and exercised once in awhile and the will go bad when cars with Chevy Trannies sit for long periods of time. What happens is the clutch bands will dry rot from lack of fluild and cause the tranny to slip. I do think you need a rebuild of the tranny to fix the problem and it is not inexpensive these days. Close to $1000 with parts and labor these days last THM 350 I had rebuilt was about 15 years ago for about $400 bucks. Another thing that happens it the Torque Convertor can go bad and it will have the same affect. I would get another opinion from a second shop to figure out what is happening in your car.
cool thanks guys for all the info! i do hope that it is nothing major but if it is i will definitely save up to get it done right. im taking it to my mechanic next week to check it out. its my first vette. my dad passed it down to me, i hope to restore and do the same to my son one day. thanks again fellas!!
