1970-Starter / Ignition issue?

1970-Starter / Ignition issue?
So sometimes my car fires up on the first turn of the key. Other times the key turns and absolutely nothing happens. 
The engine can be cold or hot it does not matter- I know that some people have suggested the issue could be a heat issue.
BUT always when I take the (Auto-THD 350) tranny and shift into neutral- it fires up just fine.
So I probably eliminated a few things with that part-- so what is the probable issue? Has anyone experienced this?

Battery cables, particularly the short ground from the battery to the frame....
And you might start looking at your shift cable for corrosion as the engine will seek a ground and the shift cable is a trouble area

I'm thinking if it works in neutral but not park the safety switch is thinking it's in reverse instead of park. When it happens again keep the key in the start position instead of releasing it and wiggle the shifter around right to the stop in park then down through reverse to neutral and see what happens.
