Default 82 smelling like gasoline!

so when i start the car it gives off a very gassy smell. and sometimes when im just cruising i can smell gas. and when i floor it i smell gas which i know is pretty normal. i was just wondering if that's a normal and a regular thing for every one else? being that its an older car and all, or if its something i need to get fixed? i know girls wouldn't appreciate it too much :/

The only times that I have been able to smell "raw" gas are when something is not right. My past experience goes something like this
Leaking fuel tank
Rubber fuel line from tank to hard line.
leaking around fuel pump hard line not tight enough.
Carburetor leaking
Carburetor float stuck
Carburetor boils over after running because of being hot.
If it only happens when your driving its most likely after the fuel pump when fuel is under pressure.
I am sure that others here will chime in and have some ideas as well.

if you smell it that often I would suspect the canister is not connected. on mine its under the water bottle on the left side. make sure the hoses are connected to the hard line going back to the tank and vac line to the vac source. Mine goes to the carb. YMMV with CFI but I'd suspect its not much diff.

The canister that draws the excess vapors from the fuel system can get Squirrely and will have several ounces of raw fuel in it (I forget why that happens)....then the carbon inside it is ruined and will let fuel vapor escape instead of containing the vapor so that the running engine can draw it into the cylinders and 'burn" it properly---I think.

Check your rubber fuel hoses located to the right side of the rear fuel cap. I had a raw fuel smell when I got my '82 and it was the fuel supply hose leaking. The smell was worse when I accelerated........I ended up purchasing the two different size rubber fuel hoses from a local parts store. Don't rush through this job! It's a tight spot back there to work in. It took me about 2 1/2 hours to replace the hoses and I did cut my hands up.
Good luck.

That happened to my 81. I was told it was the vented gas cap not venting causing the tank to build pressure.

The metal line going to my vapor canister had rust holes in it and with a full tank, I would get a smell of raw fuel...
