Default Power Steering Leaks?

My 74 has a leak in PS system. It is embarrasing when my car drips and leaves a mark. I'm tired of the jokes. Many parts are new. I think it is old hoses. Is there a sure fire cure to solve this problem?? Do I have to go to braided steel? I've been using fluid w/stop leak, not enough! I need help. Any ideas?

All sorts of things leak in the PS system.

I recently replaced it all

cylinder
control valve
pump
hoses

:) :) :)

No more leaks

I put list in order of what i think is most likely leaking first

I got my parts at
http://home.att.net/~winstab/corvettepage.html

but you can get most anywhere

good luck !!!!

First thing you need to do is identify the leak. Clean up all related parts (pwr valve, cylinder, pump, and hoses) Go for a drive, then inspect the system. If it's a hose or connection, tighten/replace. If its a seal in the valve or cylinder, rebuild/replace. Stainless hoses are not necessary.
For about $50. you can buy the pwr valve AND pwr cylinder rebuild kits. Comes with all seals and related parts. Hoses on the other hand, will run you around $60. for the complete set. I have recently rebuilt my valve and cylinder, and replaced the hoses. Rebuilding is not hard, just take your time and follow directions. You will need to balance the valve after a rebuild. The procedure is outlined in the service manual. Not hard either!!!
Mine turned out like new.. no leaks, works great, and looks great too after a coat of por-15!!
Good Luck
Eddie

I think you need to jack up the front end and look under the front end to see exactly where the leak is coming from.

From your post it sounds like you "think" it is a hose... find the "real" source first.

Stop leak is not the fix-it for all problems. Personally, I stay away from stop leak products. It has its advantages, it might  stop small leaks. But it might seal some close moving parts / passageways that shouldn't be sealed.

If you find that the leak is indeed an old hose, then replace it. You don't necessarily need braided steel hoses for the power steering system.
