Best engine for 1977
I've got a 1977 Vette. It currently has a 350 in it from 78 with auto transmission. What is the best engine and tranny to put in it to get the maximum HP without destroying my rear end. Thought 572 with 4L80-E but I was informed it would destroy the rear end. Wanting power and show don't care about gas mileage. Any Ideas?

Spending all that a money on 572 and 4l80e, why not spend some more and beef up the rear end and be done? No compromises.
Otherwise, I'd suggest moving to a newer LS engine and 4l80 or 4l60 overdrive.

If that 36 year old rear end hasn't been rebuilt, I'd say the best engine for it is the one in the car now.

"Best" is always brought down to reality by a checking account or VISA limit - so a budget is always helpful.

No budget really not planning on selling her. Just want to beef her up a little bit. What would it normally run to rebuild the rear end and how much would it change the look?

If you maintain independent suspension, won't change the look at all. Research Tom's Differentials if going that route.
If you want to move to a solid rear axle, Autofab has a 4 link conversion kit for $1150 + time + axle.

Ugh! I cringe at the thought of putting a straight axle in a 'vette! But, if that's what ya gotta do, then that's what ya do, right?
If money is no object, an LS swap is the way to go. The only downside would be that you won't be able to brag about what crappy gas mileage it gets.

You mean you get gas mileage? ( I suppose I do too, but it's gallons per mile, not miles per gallon)

consider a 427-454 sbc with a turbo 400.Toms differential is a good choice for beefing up the IRS rear .
