Reason: change
That's your steering interlock cable. When connected you have to have your car in reverse ( I think that is correct for a manual a automatic it's park) and the steering wheel in the locked position to remove the keys.
So does it move the collar on the collum to activate rear backup light mine was unhooked I hooked it up and it would stall in ever gear what does it do or purpose?
It moves the lever underneath the steering column so you can remove the keys. I am not real familiar with the manual setup I would think that the reverse switch was on the transmission.
Looking at the AIM for a 71 it shows the cable connecting to the top of the reverse lever of your transmission. Are you sure the cable was moving when connected?
Yeah, that's the reverse interlock cable. Has nothing to do with the reverse lights on a stick car- The reverse light switch is on the trans, not the column on a stick.
The cable is to prevent inattentive drivers from getting out of the car (removing the keys) without having the transmission in reverse (in case they didn't use the emergency brake either) to prevent it from rolling away.
Personally, I found it more of a nuisance than a safety feature and disabled it on my coupe.
