The steel brake line by my rear wheel sprung a leak.It only looks corroded on the last 6-8 inches can a new steel peice be spliced in or do you need to replace the whole line? The rest of the line looks to be in great shape
Are you talking about the short piece that runs from the trailing arm to the caliper or the main line running from the MC to the rear block?
"can a new steel peice be spliced in"
I would imagine that you could do it, but I would (& did) replace the entire piece (trailing arm to caliper). I don't think "fixing" it would be worth the effort and I really wouldn't trust the integrity of the old section (just by looking at the outside) or the splice.
Brake lines are cheap and since you are going to be bleeding the brakes anyway, consider replacing the line you spoke of and its twin on the other side along with the flex lines on both sides, and maybe the front. Also consider the rear crossover line that runs along the frame from the driver to passenger side. This is an afternoons work and the parts should be no more than $100 total. If one is corroded, that badly, the others probably need attention.
Don't fool about with brake lines. In the interest of your safety and others, just replace them. Not expensive.
I received a pair of those stainless caliper lines from Dr. Rebuild on Saturday and installed them. I can vouch for the quality and fitment--it's almost like the good Dr. used my car as the template for his product. They just fell right into place with no drama or "adjustment" whatsoever.
