Gentlemen.
After many months I am ready to re-install the doors on my 68 Coupe and would appreciate any tips, advice, or suggestions from someone who has done this before. The door jambs and the body pillars/jambs have been freshly painted a week or so ago and weatherstripping has been installed on the doors. The windows and power motors have been installed and the doors are relatively heavy. I will be doing this job alone with only the help of a hydraulic jack and don't want to scratch the paint or tear up the weatherstripping.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,
Leave the windows down. And you might want to remove the latches.
Use lots of card board to protect the paint, and BE VERY PATIENT....
After getting the hinges bolted up snugly, gently try to close the door, don't go all the way until you get the alignment real close or you could scratch the paint where it first contacts..
After the door hinges are completly aligned then go to the windows.
I have removed my doors several times during the 73 project and I find that it works great to remove the lower hinge pin. If the door half of the hinge is adjusted to where it should be then alot of the work is already done. Center the door on the jack with lots of protection, and align the lower hinge and install pin. Then the only adjusting needed is front and back with the upper one. Also, do your aligning with the striker bolts removed. Good Luck, Craig
Be especially careful to protect the front edge of the door and rear edge of the front fender. I used some vinyl tape. If at all possible, get a helper to hold the door while you adjust and tighten bolts. Good Luck!
