Choke sticking
This is a carter quadrajet, to my knowledge the original carb. It wants to idle high. Around 1500 in park and 1000 in gear. I can quickly gun it and let off and it will go back down to 650 in gear but as soon as I start going it goes back to fast idle. Any quick fixes?

what kind of choke do you have a rod with a coil on the intake manifold, or a round plastic cover with wires connected to it? If the round style did you remove the cover and check for debris build up in the choke housing? did you check if there is power to the choke? did you check if the coil relaxes when power is applied?

77 should have a hot air choke, Check to see if the choke is fully open when the engine is warmed up. If not the choke may need adjusted. Another possibility is there may not be exhaust flow through the manifold, someone may have blocked it, the heat riser may not be working, or there may be carbon build up in the exhaust cross over.
