Anyone have a technique for removing and replacing the mirror/glass within the existing housing? I found one post where the guy just broke it with a hammer. I do have the replacement glass/mirror so saving the old glass isn't an issue.
Unless you have a unique or rare factory mirror option, you will be better off just replacing it. The repo's are almost identical and the prices are very reasonable. When I considered the same approach (replacing only the mirror glass), I found that disassembling one is no small task. Easier to replace it....one screw.

Should have mentioned - only reason I replaced the glass in mine is because it has a working map light that isn't reproduced to my knowledge. If it was a standard mirror I probably would have just replaced the whole thing.
If you've already bought the glass though, may as well take a stab at it.

Understood, but i am trying hard to keep as many of the car's original parts as possible - especially in the interior. I pryed back that rubber surround. That's a very thick piece of glass and not a matter of just dinging it with a small hammer. I decided to ship it off to Paragon as they will replace the mirror with my original housing.
I bought a replica mirror and went to install it on the existing mount, thinking the same thing... 5 minutes. The new mounting slot is a hair narrower than the original mount so I've currently got an old flecked mirror in the car anda brand new one in a box
Hold your horses for a second. If you're talking about just replacing the mirror glass, you may not have to break anything. I need to check if the map light is the same as the one on my 73, but on that one, the glass is held in place. with a rubber seal. I'll also try to find a post that I made on it.
