Default Another 383 build

OK, I have a good block and crank for my 383. Want somewhere in 350-400hp neighborhood with good street manners. Plan on driving it a lot. I have a chance to pick up a pair of Trick Flow 30410001 SBC Aluminum heads for a really good price. No choice on cam yet since I want to get the heads right first. Would they be a good foundation to build on. I don't want to blow the budget or make some outrageous HP, just a little street rod '78 w 220R4 trans I already have. Thanks.

That part number is listed here. Pretty poor flow for a 195 head but will support 400 HP and 5500 RPM. http://www.users.interport.net/s/r/s...ehdc.htm#Chevy

If you can afford it spring for afr 180, will hit your target of 400 horse with a small enough cam to provide excellent street manners.

For the power you are wanting any 180 to 190cc head will work. I "freshened" a crate engine program for a company and that little 383 did quite well. Should be a thread on here about it.

Check out a Howards roller kit in the .500 lift range and it will put you nicely above 400hp with a sweet torque curve...Dont make the mistake I did..I .built mine the first time under cammed with flat tappet thinking I wanted it streetable. It is now not only very streetable, but very powerful...

How much, actually, is 10 cfm flow or 20 cfm flow worth HP/Torque wise? Yes I know it depends on the rest of the engine, especially the cam, but how much is it worth using a cam of 0.500 lift and a duration of 230*@0.050? Is there any formula that can be used to determine that? I used the above numbers because those are the numbers for the CC XE274 flat tappet cam that I have in my 383.

cfm X .2575 X No. of cylinder = HP
