Hi all. Below is a picture of the oil fill cap in the pass side valve cover. Not shown is the 1" breather from the same valve cover to the L-88 style carb base or the CV746C PCV valve in the other side. The oil shown in the cap is the only oil anywhere on the engine above the headers. Time frame, a couple of hours max.
So, I am interested in ideas on how the oil got there in the fill cap.
the button in the center of the cap isn't sealed off underneath, its probably some kind of rivet that holds the locking mechanism underneath. get another cap or try and punch the rivet tighter..... I had the same cap and the same problem a few years ago...
You say the breather is attached to the carb base? Shouldn't that be attached to the air cleaner assembly or similar so it can draw air in and then the PCV valve is attached to the base somewhere for vacuum on that side?
My guess is that the oil forced it's way past the rivit in the center of the cap due to excessive pressure under the valve cover or a loose fitting rivit on that cap.
A baffle under the valve cover or sealer on the rivet might hold for a little while. Most valve covers will place the fill hole between cylinders. That looks like it sits right over the exhaust valve and at certain rpm it squirts oil right at the bottom of the cap.
