Default birdcage issues

I'm in the process of tearing down my vette for a body-off restoration. My frame and birdcage seem to be very solid except for the birdcage in one area directly behind the doors on either side. there are two small holes right where that piece of trim is secured about 1 " up from the floor. It looks like what may have happened is that the rubber hoses that move the water out of the rear vents are broken. What I need to know is if anyone has had this problem and how they addressed it. I have a MIG welder and am pretty descent with it. I'm just not good at fabricating metal pieces. Is there any replacement panels for this?

Thanks,

RQ

ZIP has some corner reinforcements that go in that area. I'm not sure if
they will do the trick for you. I'm not familiar with the '69 trim in that area.

If you can post some pics - then the advice will start pouring in - I'm sure.

Do these sections of the birdcage have to be fabricated or can you buy a new part?

I don't think the zip reinforcement is gonna do that.
Mine are rotted there - but a few inches higher. I've been
thinking about it, and I think that I will need to cut the fiberglass
away from the area of the repair (ouch) :smash: .

I'm not exactly sure of the body panels on a '69 - but this might help:

Have you removed the body mount covers, in front of the rear wheels ?
These give you a good view of that corner, and the rocker channel -
where it welds on. If your channels are still solid, then the pillar repair
should be easier. The fiberglass panel that the access panels screw onto
can be removed without much difficulty. I used a 1" wood chisel - working
my way slowly between the panels to break the bond. This gives you
room to get at three of the four sides of the pillar. Proceed with caution :D

Here is a picture of my drivers side with the fiberglass panel removed ..

Good luck :seeya
