My 1982 Collector Edition starts, idles and engines revs and sounds great…until I put the car in drive and hit the gas. The engine chokes out, hesitates and sometimes stalls but starts right back up. It also will hesitate when transmission upshifts going down the road. If anyone has some suggestions with my problem, any help appreciated.
Two things to check are your fuel filter and fuel pump. Start with those. It sounds like you are losing pressure under load. Go read the sticky thread on 82's at the top of the Tech list, it has a lot of the answers you are looking for.
it would start up great, it would die if you revved it, if you hit the brakes too hard it would die, if you turned too fast it would die, with this problem bubba had installed a vacuum check valve between the MAP sensor and intake, so it always read high vacuum, so it wasent reading correct vacuum, which translates to engine load, so the computer was confused and not giving the engine correct fuel.
1-how long have you owned the 82?
2-at what rpm does it idle at in "P" & "D"?
3-have you checked fuel pressure
4-do these symtoms happen only when the engine is cold and or hot?
5-when was the last time the engine was tuned complketely (plugs, wires if neccessary, dist cap, rotor, coil, and ignition module relubed or replaced)?
6-was fuel filter ever replaced?
7-was fuel pump ever replaced?
8-once driving on the road, besides the hesitation on the trans shift, how does it run?
alot of these questions were already suggested above, your answers will help us determine what to try next.....
glad the "sticky" helped out, it's doing its job for us 82 owners....
