was driving my c3 last nigh after getting chassis fixed. i was passing an 18 wheeler on the passing lane and as i did i heard a clunk and my tranny disengaged. i cruised about 1/4 of a mile and was able to take an exit i eventually pushed car into a parking lot. my brother brought put some trans oil because it was low but not dry.... what could it be???? hoping its something small as i will jack up the car this weekend and see the damage. i checked fluid at the time and it was not burnt... or maybe it is??? ill double check tomorrow. i did notice that in the morning there was a puddle of tranny oil. anybody have this happen?the tranny goes into each gear but doesnt engage so i cannnot go in reverse or forward no matter what gear im in....any help wll be much appreciated
The clunk sound is concerning. Running out of ATF happens. Just find the source of your leak, fix it and top off the fluid. Remember to check the fluid level with the car warmed up and running.
If you ran out the fluid, it will take a fair bit to bring it back up and a little bit of time for the torque converter to refill. As dar suggested above, if you broke one of the lines to the rad, it'll be hard to refill.
i had a TH350C in a grand prix, it leaked so bad it would use 1qt a day, it would do a similar thing when it was getting low on fluid, i drove it like that for about a month before i found the leak, my pan was bent, but never did any damage to the trans running it low. i would recommend a filter change on it, that way you can replace the pan gasket as well, also look at the dip stick tube, if the rubber o-ring was gone it will only loose fluid when the car is off, due to the fluid level rising.
The only time I had a TH 350 make a loud clunking sound was from a major failure. The tabs that secure the clutch pack housing, by the large snap ring, broke out of the case. One loud clunk and then nothing. I only had to replace the housing and was back in business. That set me back two days and $25 dollars.
i will be droping the transmission on during the week to see what is wrong with it hoping its under 100 200 tops if its more i guess im getting a stick shift
