Wow, learn something new every day! 26 1/2" on my 73. I always thought something was missing on mine. But I have A/C, so I am supposed to see the ground thru those vents! Thanks, everyone. Joe

 It sure solves the clogged drain problem. I wonder why they bothered with the vents though if there's nothing underneath it? Does the 73 coupe (or vert) with the Astro Ventilation stuff intact have a plenum fiberglassed in place? I'm just surprised that GM didn't ditch the vent grilles to save a buck.
I have no reason to think the person who rebuilt my car in 1987 deleted anything back there - he seems to have done good job, using GM parts whenever possible. (To the tune of $15,000 in receipts). I have AC and Astro-Ventilation is etched in the window glass.
WRT the vents, perhaps GM styling won out over the bean counters? Or maybe it was easier to leave them in all cars, since they needed them for the non-AC cars. Joe

Re: Rear Vents on Deck Lid (Phlash)
One thing that wasn't mentioned through out this entire thread, was that he might have dry rotted/cracked hose leading to the wheel well...that's what I found with mine, replaced the hoses and now no leaks, except for the seal around the removable back glass kit that was put in mine.
Here is a pic of the underside of my '73 convt. To the left is the front of the car. To the left of the vents at the top you can see the sealed openings where the Astro Vent assembly would be. This car has A/C so the openings are sealed. If it is was not a/c then there would be a "box" connecting the outside vent to the bulkhead vent. Since it is A/C there is no need for drains as the vents are open to the ground and water just runs through.
But since Juliet brought up the rear compartment change, which I was not aware of, I can see where the vents would be inside the rear compartments on earlier sharks. Apparently there is about a 4" difference. As you can see by the ruler, it appears that the 4" would have been enough to get the vents inside the compartment. In looking at the pic it appears that you can see where the rear bulkhead had been (at the 4" mark) and then the factory just moved it forward.
Juliet, do you have a pic of your bulkhead in this area? Would be very interesting to comapir.
Thank you Juliet. It does look as if that verticle corner in my pic is the same as the rear wall on your pic. So they just moved that section 4" forward. Anyone know why? Could it be for crash protection, to give the gas tank 4 more inches before it gets crushed in a rear end accident? Or ????
UPDATE: Okay, I posted this over on the NCRS board to see if I could get any feed back on the luggage compartment sizes. Seems that the 71, 72 and 73 all have 26" deep luggage compartments. Juliets 70 is 30". So would assume that 68-70 are 30" and 73-77 are 26". Would appreciate it if someone with a 68 or 69 could check their's. Also, how about a '76 or '77? These additional measurements could help confirm.
