Just wondering does a stock '81 have a gasket on the exhaust manifold flange where the manifold meets the Y pipe? I have an annoying small leak on my drivers side that I just cant seem to get rid of no matter how tight I make the flange (Nuts still move amazingly, and I certainly don't want to snap a stud). I just figured Id try changing the gasket if there is one...Although I know GM omitted using gaskets there on certain vehicles of that era..Just wondering if the 'Vette is one of them?

I am not positive about a 81 but on earlier models they had what they refer to as a donut gasket. Go to a parts store and have them look it up. If you do not have an assembly instruction manual (AIM) the parts store Should have diagrams. Your instincts seem correct.
Tubed exhaust manifolds of the left side that have an inverted taper....do not use a donut gasket. The pipe is flared to seal against it. If it is still leaking and you have it tight as all get out...I would bet that you have a broken flange that is welded to the exhaust manifold...that the studs are threaded into. I have encountered this numerous times.

I just took my exhaust off and there was no gasket on my 1981
