Default small starter - 1976

I purchased a small starter when the original one started having problems after the car ran for a while. I installed the new one as it was sent from Summit. It did not engage the flywheel. I moved the starter to an alternate mounting point. It still did not engage the flywheel. There are some adjustments that seem to want to rotate the starter. Any suggestions on what I need to do?

auto or stick, same starter......if its the small GM starter replacing the large case starter it should fit......If its one of those imports with an adapter cant help......the small gear reduction GM is the way to go however.....
