I would like to refinish the ash tray door on my 79. Is there a trick to getting the door off or do you have to remove the console. If I need to remove the console I'll paint it in the car. I can't tell if its medium gloss or satin black or what ever matches?
There are two plastic push rivets under the console and a spring. Yes you have to pull the console to remove the door. I sanded mine completely down, etch primed it and used SEM trim black on mine and it matches really well. Good luck!
There's some plastic pop rivets holding it and acting as the pivot bushing for it. Mine did not want to budge so I ended up cutting them to bits to break them free. I can't remember if you can do it on the car or not, but it'd be easier to take it off.
I did mine when I had the console out anyway, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to take the console out to do it. At the very least, the sides have to come off. The first time I did mine I painted it in satin black and it was too shiny. I did it again in flat black and it matched perfectly. Yeah, it didn't make sense to me either.
