Does anyone know if I will have the clearance to fit a 454 with Merlin heads and tall v/c with my power brakes? I noticed some guys have the BIG block but run into trouble near the master cylinder area. It look AWFULLLLLL close in a lot of pics......
Mr. Gearhead, I have Merlins on my 454 in a 71 coupe, but I dont have pw brakes. I used GM performance valve covers and Crane gold race roller rockers with thick gaskets. I think you might have some problems with clearance though with the power brakes. You might check out Ecklers or Corvette central for the answer. The merlins really rock with the BB, the other problem with the raised port style is the headers are very tight to the steering box and on the other side the idler arm. Good luck, and If you would like let me know and I can email you some pictures of my monster! Regards, Tom
A lot depends on how tall your tall valve covers are. I got mine to clear but it took a lot of denting and grinding to get it there, not an easy task plus risking ruining a set of valve covers. Fortunately mine turned out well, glad I did it now but I'd think twice about doing it again, but it did give me the clearance for the rocker arms.
I know that there are a couple of members who have converted their power brakes to hydraulic assisted brakes powered by the power steering pump. Those units are much smaller than the vacuum boosters.
