Default STEEROIDS Kit for under a "G"

If anyone is interested, you can get the STEEROIDS rack and pinion conversion kit for $999 from JEGS. Its not in the catalog. Call customer service (the tech reps are no help) and speak with Rick. The part# is CMP83030. He has ordered mine. He said if he gets enough interest he'll stock it.

"IF" I have money left over from my motor work on my truck, and "IF" I have money left from the rear suspension rebuild, this will be the next item on the list.

I contacted Steeriods about a non power system. Their intelligent answer was just to get it and don't connect power to it. With 12 to 1? I wonder if Steeriods sells steriods? :smash:

Me too :mad Curious that the maker of the kit is more expensive than a distributor, it doesn't sound like Jegs has bought a big batch of them to get the price down either  Oh well, its only money I guess...

Neither do I, but I have to tell myself something to try to ease the pain...

When steeroids came out with the kit last fall, they sold a few for about 950 bux...just under a grand, then first of the year jacked up the price....because the numbers didn't come out for outfits like Jegs to buy/sell them and turn their percentages....so the retail had to go up....and any factory/supplier/originator of any system has to sell at 'list' price in order to protect the large customers....(summit, jegs, etc)....they will not compete against their own customers....

I thought of tooling up and making my own brackets available, but got maybe one weak response on here, and so that ideal folded rapidly....
at any rate, I would not be powdercoating/etc.....and with that adaptor block of steel for the tie rods...machine shop provided, and my brackets, and input linkage, at 400 bux a setup, customers would have to provide their own rack....and tie rod ends/couplings....it's a time and effort thing....

mrvette:

I might be interested in a scaled back version without R&P gear.

71 4 me, well that's the whole thing I was trying to do...something scaled back, I don't have the time and health to be chasing around tooling up to compete with a company doing the same thing....

but, IF some guys that are a bit like me, and into doing their own thing, but are limited on a time and effort basis....
I could help over the top...but some driving to junkyards for cores if necessary, and maybe even a good rack is possible, like I scored...just look for leaks around the middle bellows...if it's really wet, and the center sections are not magnetic, it's junk....if it's dry and major components of the rack itself are magnetic...meaning steel....it's good to go....
the other thing is, I"m not tooling up for making expensive steering input linkages....these are VERY common in junkyards, and press apart like any other universal joint and are staked in place again....look at the construction and if you can't figger out an easy arrangement on that, well maybe buy the steeroids setup....what can I say....
just keep in mind that about 30-35 degrees deflection is the most a universal joint can accept...so get out the protractor and look closely....that's what I did...

the machined adaptor block of steel to mate the rack to the stock tie rods is critical...mine cost ME 80 bux to have it made here locally in Jacksonville...
NOW on top of that, I mis guessed the angles, and the tie rods were way too close to the ground, so needed angled upward...that meant cutting and rewelding the steel to tilt them upward about 45* worth....
MY rack position is not perfectly in the center, as I was trying to avoid buying another set of headers, unsuccessfully I might add....
so that affects MY design of the rack mounting...not the passenger's side, that is a vertical/horizontal thing only....the lateral forces like the original linkage setup are applied to the driver's frame rail only...the pass side being only a locating link.....BTW it's offset only an inch or so to the driver's side...if that...
If you look at the rack, it's set up the same way...ONE lateral force point...at the input end of the rack....
Another thing to do what I did, make my own, you need welding capability, SOMEHOW, and meaning a GOOD TIG welder, not spark it together with mig or some such....it's a craft best done to NAVY specs....
it IS the steering for christsakes....
