I agree with 7t9l82 about the OBX stainless sidepipes. Ordered them from Danny Wong at Sparktec last year for the best price, absolutely no issues at all with my 1980 L82 but would suggest the spark plug heat boots to add to the sidepipe thread comments. The exhilaration in sight and sound is well worth it and more than I can describe.

I am dropping my frame and assorted parts off at Elegant Iron to get blasted and powder coated Friday. I'll ask Amanda if they know of anyone here in Tucson that does the ceramic coating.

Glackore, where did you get them coated at? and what was the cost?

I have a set of hookers side pipe Headers that I converted for my LSX conversion. I want to get them coated.

Thanks

I have the jet hot coating on my s/s long tube headers. Three years and they still look as good as when I picked them up.

Contacted ARC Coating in Phoenix and was told $300 for exterior coating plus 30% more for interior coating. I first thought...why do the inside....but then about 3 seconds later it occurred to me....to block the moisture...duh....

Unless I can find a shop here in Tucson, looks like I will be making a trip to "the center of the universe".....LOL.....

the coating on the inside helps keep the pipes cooler, which helps keep the coating on the outside from peeling. I'm a big fan of this stuff! I like to coat manifolds, headers or anything that's going to get really hot under the hood!

In 2002, I bought Hooker side-pipe headers and tubes directly from Jet-Hot. They are coated inside and out. This makes removing the tubes more difficult than for non-coated applications and some of the coating does get roughed up from repeatedly taking them off and re-installing them, but I use anti-seize on the collector pipe/tube joint and there is no rust there. I bet I have the record for taking the tubes off and on, because I have been looking for the best sidepipe sound for years and have had Hooker glasspaks and Max-Flows, 3 sizes of Sweet Thunders and STS baffle inserts. The STS Baffles are tunable and I have taken the pipes off numerous times to close or open up the center cap on the baffles.

After 11 1/2 years, I have one tiny bubble on the outside of one tube. The place where mine may fail, in another 15 years maybe, would be on the exterior surface of the first primary tube behind the front tire, where sand and pebbles are thrown onto the tube. I have thought about making a shield for that first pipe based on the same concept as a side-pipe heat shield.

This photo is from about 6 months ago. The pipes still look pretty good.

Hey Tim,

When I bought a new set I called Jet-Hot and bought them thru them. It was the best deal. Used pipes & headers may not take the coating - call Jet-Hot. Mine came from OKC.

The picture of Super6's car reminds me of another question....with the side exhaust ceramic coated are the heat shields still required?
I bought bare metal ones and then painted flat black to match the sidepipes...so I was thinking that with ceramic coating I would not need to put them back on....or I could have the shields ceramic coated to match.

I'm in Florida and am almost always wearing shorts and short socks. Over the years, I've gotten a few good burns, mostly from when I let someone else drive the car and I'm getting in the passenger side, which I'm not used to. My grandkids are getting interested in the car and I thought it was time to put a little burn-protection on the pipes for them. If you're in jeans all the time, I don't think it's a problem.

Stainless steel.
Anything else is just temporary when it comes to this application....
I paid like $650-700 bucks for my stainless obx pipes and another $240 for the hooker mounting kit and sweet thunder mufflers. Took 30 minutes with a dremel to polish all the welds....

i got the OBX pipes and got a couple cans of the eastwood ceramic coat you can spray thru a tube into the header. i don't know how much good it did but i guess its something. i live in florida too but i have never been one to wear shorts so i have no issue with the sidepipes . and i see shields that are around 400 bucks, in my opinion thats nuts. if someone wants to ride with me wear jeans. i don't let women on my harley wearing shorts either.

Sounds like I should have the heat shields I have coated at the same time...same color.

Or may be I should paint the heat shields black like the car is now...hhmmmmm.....???

to close the loop on my earlier post.

talked to the guys at the place I am getting my stuff blasted and powder coated. They can powder coat the headers to handle really high temps but they said it isn't as good as the Jet Hot application.

finallygotit: thanks for the update...I have been looking for a ceramic coater here in Tucson, but so far have not found one.
I still think there used to be a Jet Hot in Phoenix area...but appears they are gone. I am not wanting to ship the sidepipes to NC....that would be far too expensive!

So looks like two trips to Phoenix is coming-up for me.
