I currently have a set of the black sidepipes and have been thinking about getting the headers and tubes ceramic coated; anyone have any experience with this?
How does this finish hold-up over time and use?
A specific question: any shops in the Tucson or Phoenix areas?
MANY years ago, I had a set of the Hookers on a Pontiac T/A that I used to own. Loved them, until they rusted severely, and the collectors literally fell off the primary tubes. Anyway, I would think that if you got them coated, you'd be scratching the crap out of the collectors, as you assembled the side tubes to them, and the same, if you ever needed to remove the side tubes.
Mine were coated inside and out by Jet hot and have held up really well. Even with some abuse the coating does not scratch off or flake off after 3 years.
Where the side pipes slide over the collector it does wear off though. Don't know how to avoid that. You can't see it until you pull the side pipes off, so it's not visible.

True, but if you scrape the coating off, you have bare metal, and bare metal =rust potential.
Better than black spray paint out of a rattle can. If you have a better solution than ceramic coating, please share it with us.

I don't, other than the SS versions.....
As far as I'm concerned, the Hooker side pipes I bought were absolute JUNK!! Lasted only 2 summers on the car, and even though I still consider $700 a fair chunk of change, it was a LOT of money in 1977, when I bought them for my car.

LOL! It's funny that you mention stainless steel, because I came back to post this:
1977, huh? And that was back when Hooker still had a good rep for making quality stuff, unlike nowadays. And, yeah, I remember, 700 bucks was a lot of money back then. To put things in perspective, a postage stamp cost 13 cents in 1977, and people bitched about it because it wasn't that long ago that it was only 8 cents! Wow, I am turning into my Grandfather.....Damn kids these days....

that's right, folks, diehrd posted this link on another thread, and I snatched it up and came running to this thread, to post it and take credit for it. And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling kids!
Seriously, though, diehrd, can I at least get an assist?

That's what I thought, too, so I sent them 2 letters explaining what happened to my headers, and asked them to stand behind their product. Not one single word!

Yep, unfortunately rust is the Bain of existence for exhaust components except for stainless. I coated mine for under hood heat control not to prevent rust. But it does prevent rust everywhere there is not metal on metal chafing.
There is a place here in Ohio that will ceramic coat anything. Charges by the length of tube. Coats inside and out. I have the name and address around here someplace if anyone would want it.
WOW...only $875 for stainless steel.....if only I have known about this company before I bought the black Hooker sidepipes....think I paid nearly that much...arrggghhhh!
Jet Hot used to be in Phoenix...have to check to see if they still are.
Thanks for the link...anyone have these Huron sidepipes?
I have Jet Hot Sterling ceramic on my 64 SS and Vette headers. The headers have been on the 64 SS for 18 years and still look like new. The only way to do it is have brand new headers coated inside and out. If they are used, rust has already started and the probability of completely eliminating before coating is slim.
Another trick to making exhaust in general last is always run the car long enough to get the exhaust hot all the way to the tip so it burns off all the moisture inside. Leave moisture inside and pipes will deteriorate quickly!

Yeah my new Hookers were coated by Jet-Hot inside and out. I don't believe they will "never rust out" but the coating is nicer looking than paint and lasts much longer. Mine are on their 3rd year in TX. I expect several more years out of them.

nothing is indestructible. i have the obx side mounts in stainless and i couldn't believe how well they fit. use anti seize on the extension tube to make getting them off easier.
