1969 with power steering. I was driving my car. Parked in a parking lot and went into a store for 15 minutes. When I came out and started the car, the steering wheel spun hard to the left and stayed there. No power steering. I was able to drive home slowly. The steering wheel pulled hard to the left. When I got home, checked the fluid. It was a little low. Added fluid and started the car. Same thing. I forced the wheel to the right. Something popped. Steering works fine now. I am a little nervous to drive it again. If if happens while driving it would be a disaster. Any thoughts on what might have caused this?
Sounds like an issue with the power steering control valve?
What I have heard is that on some cars or situations the wrong pitman arm is used causing this issue due to and improper angle generated when using the wrong pitman arm. What I saw on my buddies car is he had a manual steering pitman arm on a power steering setup and it caused a serious issue when the steering was at a certain degree and it caused the wheel to go hard over on its own.
Have you done anything new to the steering or updated anything? Can you get the part number off your pitman arm and post it up? I don't have the correct number but Jim on the forum here will know. He is the top dog for steering stuff here. I have a mental block on his proper last name sorry to you both on that.
I rebuilt the steering box. To pull the Pittman arm, I had to disconnect the two lines to the control valve. I carefully marked the Pittman arm and installed it as it was. I reconnected the lines and replaced the lost fluid. It has been working fine for a couple of weeks.
