During this extreme heat my 74 has been running rough on occasion. I haven't had the problem consistant enough to figure it out. First off I have a high amp alt. But I am running dual Spal fans. The problem seems to be when the fans and AC are going. I wonder if the stereo has been part of problem? The car gets real "fluffy". It seems like it is not getting enough fire to plugs or the carb is loading up. It barely runs off idle. I have to rev it up and it does not clear up, it just runs weak.It also has been hard to start when hot. I have to crank the engine and hold the pedal to the floor. W/tems over 100 I don't need these problems.
It sounds like to me that you have a vapor lock condition. The heat from your motor is vaporizing the fuel in the fuel line, so that it flashing in the carburetor into a vapor. Your fuel pump won't pump boiling gasoline very well. I have seen finned devices that clamp onto the fuel lines and are supposed to help get rid of the heat.
Back in the ancient days one of my older sister's boyfriends drove an old 49 f*rd, that constantly vapor locked in the summer time. He would a cold softdrink and shake it up and spray it on the fuel line.
I went out and checked and found my fuel line running up against valve cover. Do you think that is the problem causing vapor lock? I got some innertube and placed it between valve cover and fuel line to insulate. Have I solved my problem? I will keep you posted. Thanks for the quick response.
The rubber between the gasline and the hot sounds like a nickel fix for a situation that could cost dollars. It should be easy to carefully bend the gasline off the hot...and if it quits in traffic, you could have a real big problem?
