Again on my '81: there is some type of material that was applied to the sides and bottom of both compartment that has become nothing but "goo" in some areas....others are still quite hard and will not scrape-off at all.
Did the factory apply some type of undercoating in these compartments?
So I have removed most of the "goo" areas and some additional that I could get to come off, so now what would be a suitable material to apply in these compartments?
I believe what you are encountering was originally a very thin (maybe 1/8") black foam covering. Over a period of many years, it starts to disintegrate and break down. When it does, it becomes a soft goo. When you touch it, it smears on your fingers and gets on everything. See of you can shop vac whatever is left without actually touching the stuff. Good luck. I had the same stuff on another vehicle and it was a mess to deal with.

Makes sense; I have all the "goo" off now...just need an idea as to what to coat the insides of the battery and jack compartments with.
I was thinking of trying the Undercoat stuff in the spray can....or perhaps truck bed liner. It needs something....
I used 3M undercoating on the underside. I believe it was 08881. Says not paintable but I used Krylon lacquer to paint it and it looks close to the original. Takes a couple of days to out gas all of the fumes. mike...

Yes. Undercoating/sound deadening was appiled to the underbody at the factory. Inside and out. The AIM has a couple or three pages of how the stuff was to be shot. I used 3M automotive undercoating from the rattle can.

After cleaning out both compartments I sprayed with 3M Undercoating in the spray can. Looks good...smells awful though....hopefully smell goes away in a couple of days.
As this is on my '81 I removed the ECM bracket from the battery compartment and in doing so the three "grommet nuts" all came apart. These are something like a thread well nut but not quite the same. They really look like a grommet with a brass nut molded in.
I will probably just use a grommet and a regular nut and washer...should work fine...just will not be stock.....but so what.
ECU???? Our C5 main computer is called the PCM (Power Train Control Module) Its is in the passengers wheel well (outside the cabin, under the battery). I suspect that you are referring to the BCM (Body Control Module). It’s inside the cabin, in the passengers FOOT WELL behind the toe board (next to the fuse box).
I have yet to see any CAPACITOR/s damage but, there’s always a first time. I suspect that you have something that is failing to shut down properly causing your excessive draw. Its pretty common.
To properly isolate it, you will need to figure out if it’s coming from under the hood, or inside the cabin.
