I need to replace the fuel pump on a 72 LT-1 sbc as the body is leaking and was wondering if I need to replace the fuel pump plate at the same time? what does the fuel pump plate do and how could you tell if it needs to be replaced.
Hi 20,
Since you'll have the fuel pump off it's just 2 more bolts to remove the plate.
I think I'd do it to replace the gasket between the plate and block.
Upper 2 bolts are for the pump and lower 2 for the plate.
Regards,
Alan
And the next question is . . . how do you keep the fuel pump push rod in place to install the fuel pump? Heavy grease!
Either heavy grease or the bolt in front will do. Make sure the camshaft is in a position where the push rod can be fully inserted. You don't want to be fighting that rod against the pump spring when you button up the pump attachment bolts.
And yes take the plate off and use a gasket with a sealing compound such as Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket. It seals very nicely. If you have A/C you don't want to repeat that job because of a leak. The pump is inaccessible from the top.
