Default spedo & tach swap

I have a spedo & tach that dont work, and i found one cheaper to purchase than to fix mine...

is there any reason i shouldn't do this?

is there anything i should think about when installing the new one?

It would be nice that you state the year of your car when posting.

I had to look at some of your older posts so I can only assume that is has to deal with your 79...right???

I would not do this....UNLESS you have confirmed that the printed circuit board for the speedo/tach cluster and or circuit board for the tach is bad...and that the speedometer cable or cruise control transducer is bad...or even if the plastic gears in your transmission are bad. Because just going out and buying something "thinking" that it is going to fix it is insane.

You did not state that you tested/checked these issues to confirm what is actually broken.

Not only that...but the mileage reading is not the same on the used speedo.

sorry for the lack of info

this is for my 79 L-82....i have replaced the spedo cable, replaced the plastic gear in the transmission, and the light on the spedo and tach light up, but both read incorrectly.....i also have no cruise control ....

i can fix for 500 or buy used for 150....

No idea where you are, but in KC, there's a shop that fixes the speedo for $125. At least that's what they charged me to fix the one in the '77 I had. If the tach is the same amount, $250 for both.

Something is definitely odd since the Speedo is mechanical and should almost never fail.

But the cable does route through the cruise control. So it seems to me that is a good place to start.

Try plugging the mechanical cable from the tranny directly into the speedo and see if it works.

Food for Thought: How do you know the used stuff is in working order?

the car sat out side with leaking t-tops for about 8 years...everything inside had to be gutted due to the water...so i would imagine that it has corroded...the needle is off by about 10 mph and then it bounces once your reach a certain speed

MAN...you can't do this.

Start a post and then start giving more IMPORTANT information that can directly effect peoples suggestions and responses. Being outside and interior water damage does effect so much.

The speedo being off has EVERYTHING to do with either the cruise transducer being bad...or your speedo gears in the transmission are incorrect...due to a different rear axle ratio...and rear tire size. Just because you replaced the speedo gear in the transmission does not mean it is the correct gear.
