Do to recommendations by some experienced painters, I'm going to replace the rear clip on my 71 coupe. I'm trying to get a game plan and not sure if I should go with new parts or try to buy a used rear clip.
I have replaced all rear parts at one time or another but was unsure if all four rear pieces can be replaced as a "unit". I'm talking about deck, both quarters and taillights. It seems like the alignment on a unit would be challenging at the doors.
If someone has done both, which is quicker and less painless? Anyone care to make a time estimate on something like this? Any tips on the removal-install sequence would be helpful.
What we did on mine was we mocked up the new panels on the car. Wood screws were used to hold the panels together via new bonding strips. Once everything was aligned properly the seams were glassed temporarily. The screws were left in place.
Then the whole rear clip was lifted off the car, bonding adhesive applied, and bonded onto the car.
Finally the screws were removed and the seams ground out wider (removing the screw holes) and glassed again.
