What is your definition of "good, practical", not too expensive? If so go with KYB

Yep KYB, Gas-a-just if you have steel rear spring, would be my bang for the buck.

From your description of needs the KYB may work OK for you. The Bilstein Heavy Duty are a large step up from the KYB though. Lot better ride and handling than KYB. The Bilstein Sport shocks are stiffer and unless you are driving very hard or Autocrossing may be stiffer than you want.

Monroe Gas-Matics are decent and inexpensive...but might only last 5 years, or so. If you plan on keeping the car for MANY years, just spend a bit more on Bilsteins and be done with it FOREVER (well, as far as we're concerned, anyway).

as a testimony to bilstien, in 1988 i bought a trans am with the lingenfelter 383. i drove that car over 300k miles at 250 k miles i swapped out the factory bilstiens for a new set of bilstiens and found no change in anything. very good shocks.

Bilsteins are worth every extra dollar spent! If you want a great ride, plus a quality product that will undoubtedly last the Bilsteins are the way to go.

Bilstein's will provide a superior ride to just about any shock, provide outstanding shock absorption and handling, AND will never wear out as others have correctly noted. They are worth every penny more than mass market shocks like Monroe, Gabriel, etc BUT if all you are looking for is a basic shock then KYB. I have Bilstein's on my 78 L-82, Chrysler 300, and 94 Mustang GT Convertible-Bilsteins on each vehicle literally transformed the ride and Handling. I have a set of Doug Rippie Motorsports Specially valved Bilstein Sports in the garage awaiting installation on my 10 Z06 with 2,800 miles on it based on my personal Bilstein experience and testimonies from other Z06 owners who have made the change to DRM Bilsteins. The only aftermarket shock/strut that I have been satisfied with besides Bilsteins are the 2001 Impala Police/Struts from Monroe (GM approved for Police/Taxi with a lifetime warranty) on my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix-I have been very impressed-again not cheap BUT worth the money-$400 for 4 quick struts-springs/strut assembled.

Bilstein HD's and be done with it. They have the best ride and help with the handling.

Default KYBs good, Bilstein's better!

I have found both brands to improve the ride and handling on my C3's over Delco or Monroe. Bilstein is worth the xtra $$$.

The KYB gas-a-just shocks are a very good compromise. They are excellent shocks, for a stock suspension. And they will last as long as you have your car (unlike the GR-2's).

I would probably never buy anything other than Bilstein Sports for a C3.

Monroe Sensa-Tracs.....if you want a VERY smooth ride with NO performance capability!

I installed them on my '34 SBC truck....

it rides like an Escalade now rather than a Radio Flyer---

and corners like an Escalade too...LOL
