Default Clutch Pin Replacement

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've needed some help and thought I'd see if anyone has any experience here.

I have a 1973 L82 with a 4 spd and the clutch pin (attaches the clutch pedal to the rod that goes through the firewall in case I'm calling it the wrong thing ) snapped. Actually the idiot who owned the car before me replace it with a screw that snapped but regardless I need to install a new one.

In diagnosing the problem, I found that I have very little room to work with under the dash so I am wondering if there is a 'trick' that anyone can share. The only thing I could think of is to detach the rod on the engine side of the firewall in the hopes that I could then pull both towards the floor and get some room to work....but that's just a flyer.

Any insights or experiences is greatly appreciated.

Jim

Hi Jim,
This sounds UGHLY!
I believe the 'pin' you're asking about is actually part of the clutch pedal arm.
It might be welded into place or perhaps pressed into place.
Can you get any sense of if the pin is broken off the arm and left a hole or has it left some of the stub of the pin still connected to the arm?
Knowing that might help people give you some advice.
Sorry!
Regards,
Alan

This is going to be a whole lot more work than you are hoping for, but its not as bad as it sounds. You are going to have to remove the pedal assembly and probably replace the clutch pedal. You may be able to repair it by welding on a new stud once you get it apart but I'm thinking a new pedal is indicated.

I just had the pedal assembly out of my car to install the third pedal for my TKO 600 conversion.

You will have to remove the steering column and the gauge cluster to access the pedal assembly. Once you've done that, its not that hard to get it out.

Plan on spending a day at it. You'll need help to get the column back in, but otherwise its not that big a deal.

Hi Jim,
If you follow Fred's link you'll see the pin was pressed into place and welded.
You MIGHT be able to break the weld with the arm in place and then push a new pin in to position; but I think that's a long shot!
I'd say the arm/assembly needs to come out to do a satisfactory repair.
Regards,
Alan

you need to pull the pedal assembly and weld in a new pin.

I had a bad feeling that you guys were going to say something like this. I was a bit optimistic when I saw that I could buy a pin at Eckler's for $2 but my experience with the a@@ that I bought the car from is that anytime he took a short cut it was because bad things were about to happen. (http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corve...1964-1981.html)

I always hate jobs like this because I usually find 16 other things along the way that I end up doing as well.

Thanks for the insights and advice....yea though I shall walk through the valley shadow of death.......

Wrong pin. That's the pin at the clutch fork.
You'll need the pedal assembly OR you'll need to fabricate something.

Here's a fairly descriptive photo to see the pin on the clutch arm.

Like has been mentioned, the most stable repair will involve getting this entire assembly out to fix or replace.

Good luck.

the pin can easily be replaced once the assembly is out of the car.

That's a great thread. I'm going to have to learn how to post photos.

The suggestion to drill out the pin and replace it with a grade 8 bolt is a good one. I wish I had paid more attention to mine while It was apart. Never occurred to me the pin could fail.

If you have access to a welder, this would be a good way to make the repair. If not, the clutch pedal is only about $80.

I replaced the the pin on my clutch pedal due to wear.
I had to buy a bag of pins, if you would like one, send me your address. I can ship by Tuesday.
