firewall grommets

do i need to put any sealer on the grommets where they pass thru the firewall?
have cleaned all the bitumen from the firewall to clean up the appearance, but wondering if the grommets need any extra help.
also which is the correct way to install the 4 hole tach grommet, tapered side in or out?
also a couple of the original grommets are still a bit grotty, whats the beat way to clean them up?
ie; the one with the vacuum lines molded as one piece.
I put a little sealer on the grommet, pushed them in place, and then cleaned up the sealer that oozed out.
Isn't the tapered tapered grommet a 3 hole grommet with the tapered end in the engine compartment.
The 4-hole grommet has the 'fatter' side in the engine compartment too.
I use lacquer thinner to clean up the existing grommets. Be careful you don't get it any of the hose stripes since it'll take the stripe off.
Regards,
Alan
