Default heads and cam

Thinking about edelbrock 60909 aluminum heads and Summit K1102 cam for my 81. I want to keep stock carb and computer. Will this set up work and will I have a noticeable difference in power!

The heads will boost power for sure . That cam is a very old style cam and will give you a bone stock idle for your ecm. There are better cams out there that will yield more power and still have a smooth idle.

I made 259 rwhp with the 6909 heads and comps xe 262h. It was a fun combo. Much better with a 2400 rpm stall converter. I had 3.08 gearing and always thought it would have been better with 3.42 or so rear gear. I'd recommend a roller cam for sure. Depending on your goal, rear gear, compression and transmission w would help for a recommendation as to cam size and weather that combo would meet your goals. Good luck.

Thanks guys for replying. I would like to get around 300-350 hp but I don't know how far I can go with the computer controlled carb. This is the setup that summit suggested. I hoping I can get more with out switching dist. and carb etc, etc. I know a guy that knows much about the computer controlled quadrajet of which he has already put bigger jets in it and has made a big difference in performance. I would like the loopy idle if the computer can handle. I still open to suggestions

To much overlap will mess with your computer.

With the #8605 spring upgrade. As always, with any upgrade, timing and carb tuning will provide optimal results. This combination will get you 50+ HP over the combo you posted with less overlap. Much better option for your computer controlled carb/dist.

Be careful with taking advice from Summit. They likely have little to no real world experience in carbureted applications and you have no idea who your talking to or their qualifications. Those answering the phones are likely making minimum wage for a reason. JMHO.

I with 63Mako

He picked out a cam to go with my setup and I'm very happy with it.
It also was a Lunati cam.

ZZ4 heads, Edelbrock manifold and Carb. Summit headers. 280 RWHP on a Dyno.

Have Fun with it.

That is pretty awesome RWHP for those L98 165 cc port heads, About 350 FWHP. What compression, cam, trans, rear gear.

I don't remember all that stuff Mako.
I'm in the just drive it and enjoy it mode.

Original 350 block with less than 60,000 miles.
The original owner ran Mobil ! oil in it so all I did was hone it out and put in new rings and bearings and of course new cam and lifters, ZZ4 heads and so on.

It had a Turbo 400 and I put in a 700r4.

I have gotten 20 mpg a couple of times and it shifts out of 3rd at 115mph.

Hope this answers you questions.

Thanks

Ralph

Good enough. Your cam is likely the next one bigger.

EDIT:, No, yours was the flat tappet version of it. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-60102/

They changed their cam numbers so I don't know any more.
Mine was the biggest cam you could use with a stock converter.
And it wasn't roller

check out speed way ,they have some aluminum heads for $450 each .there are a few other places that sell aluminum heads for better prices then summit .make sure to get the right chamber cc head .figure out your static compression before you buy any thing .the voodoo cams have some nice lobes ,or check out the smaller comp extreme cams .do you plan on using a performer intake ?do you have headers ?

Thanks to everyone for responding. I have been reading, reading, listening and listening to all the things about upgrading a 81 and keeping what is working. I guess I need to decide if I want to just cruise or burn some rubber. The more I read, it is starting to seem like a complete engine is the way to go. If I go with just heads and cam, for around $1000 more I can get a complete engine. I just looking for something that will fit under the stock hood and be the best bang for the buck. I am sure someone out there has been in the same situation as me on an 81. I need more input.
