Well Jinkies Shaggy, you need to go take a look at Jim's papers at CorvetteFAQ.com in the steering section.
You will see that the switch itself is down lower on the column and operated by a rod. Hopefully, that rod just fell out of place. Then you can service it without tearing apart the column.
If I was to guess, I would say it sounds like your plastic sector inside the column went Kaput! When you rotate your lock cylinder with the key, does the round rod running down to the ignition switch move at all? There was a posting very recently on this same topic, with the same type of problem.
You don't mention if you have a T&T or a regular column. My papers don't directly address replacing the sector but the papers will be a big help in getting the column apart to replace it.
In fact, if you have a T&T I will send you an advance copy of my recently revised paper. The plastic sector is available from various vendors including GM dealers.
Jim,Have you posted your revised paper on the corvettefaq.com yet.I need to remove my indicator switch to repair the indicator lever, which is loose.
Thanks Neil.
