exactly how much difference is there between 225s 15s and 255s 15s? I see 225s on sale all the time but I never see 255s advertised. am I looking at bottoming out problems?
Mark:
A 225/70/15 tire is 27.4" tall and the 255/60/15 is a 27.05" tall tire. The 255s will be wider. I'm not if you'll be able to fit 255s on all four corners, some people have fit them....others have had rubbing issues in the front. Your car will most likely handle better with 255s and hook up better.
Just bought a set on 225/70/15's for my 71. It had them on it when I bought it.
Saw a lot of vetts with them on it at Elmhurst last wensday night.
Some had 255's on rear only with 225's on front.
I felt I would have no problems with them all the way around.
I do not want to hit a bump and have tire crack fender.
The do ride very nice. BF Goodrich 225/70/15's all four installed with road haz.just under $350.00
I have gt+4s all the way around and they do rub in the front if I crank the steering around. I just don't want to spend a crapload of cash for tire tht are going away in 6 months

Re: 225 tires (Markm10431)
Have you thought about 60 series tires.
I'm putting 225/60R15's on the front and 255/60R15's on the back.
The 60's will give a little better performance on the curves.

A 225-60 is significantly shorter than a 225-70, gb. It's going to give your 'Vette a real funky look with big 'n' littles. You'll also notice that when you go shorter, it tends to quicken the steering response...not always a good thing as it can make the car a bit on the twitchy side. There is also a lot more to suspension tuning to generalize something like sidewall flex as something that will make some improvement. There are always trade-offs and a blending of compatible components.
What width range will fit the stock aluminum rims? the car has 255/60R15s naow and all need to be replaced. I want to go low cost, and eliminate the rubbing in the front
right now the car has 255 60 r15s.. I want to go inexpensive, since 16 or 17 " rims are going to happen in the next 6 months. lower x0 numbers are wider, right? a 40 series is wider than 50's? or is that backwards?
Wider is better :D I have 245's on all four corners. Newer tires when I bought it, so I think I'll leave it. I'll probably put 255's on the rear, and leave the 245's on the front.
I have 255's all the way around on my '76. They don't rub, but its real close. I know someone else with 255's on an identical car and they rub badly. Would there be small size differences from different manufacturers or would the front suspension have anything to do with it?
To be safe, when it comes time to replace my tires, I will go with the 245's.
Possibly both. DOT tires are measured in section width, not tread width. You've seen some tire with very square shoulders? Those tires would have the same section width as an identically marked tire but would have a wider tread width. This would not be reflected in the numbers. Of course, if their suspension was flat, that can cause some rubbin'
