sorry to keep draging this topic up, but i'm lost (easily done)
need a new water pump for my stock 1972 350 with a/c
i know that there is a specific pump for the vettes, a 'long' short pump, 3/4" shaft and spigot and about 5.795 long.
but none of the websites actually list the sizes, and being from downunder, i dont want to buy the wrong one and not have things line up.
so can somebody please list some part numbers from 'Summit' that will do the job?
either in alli or cast.
local shops down here dont know the differance, and as soon as you say for a vette, the price jumps thru the roof
The correct one is the short-style water pump with the 3/4" (19mm) pilot shaft. Here is a typical listing at the Edelbrock website. Edelbrock part number: 8812 (satin finish, standard rotation) http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...igh_perf.shtml
Enter your vehicle metrics (1972, Chevrolet, Corvette) in the Summit Racing search Make/Model, click the Search button. Then expand the Part Type section in the left column, find Water Pumps, Mechanical then click on it to display a listing of 43 correct WPs for your '72 Vette from remanufactured ($26.97) to new ($314.97). Majority of the listings will describe whether cast-iron or aluminum and, of course, the remanufactured ones would be cast-iron. If metallurgy type not listed then you should assume cast-iron and that would be evident by the cheaper price.
[QUOTE=Mike Ward;1586388902]Why not get a correct GM pump from one of the Corvette vendors like CC or Wilcox?
I ordered a GM pump from Summit, and when I got it, it said it was made in China....I think, or some country I don't support. SO, back it went and I bought an Edelbrock, MADE IN USA.
A smart move would be to go to your local parts store and buy one. They should know what they are doing po0r else they would not be in business... more likely than not it will be a NEW Airtex pump...We have sold this brand for years....good warrantee and local and they probably are willing to help with any questions

here in australia, not may speed shops stock vette parts, only the generic chev one size fits all type parts.
yes there a few vette parts importers, but they want an arm and a leg for parts.
buying the above quoted "Edelbrock 8812" at Summit, even with postage of 68$ US,
i will still save 60$ on what i can get if for over here...
my shopping power on the internet will beat rip of merchants anyday.
summit's fleabay shop is 20$ cheaper postage than there web shop
even cheaper now
Too bad Amazon.com doesn't ship free to International destinations under their Prime program. I pay $79/year to be a Prime member and any item marked with the Prime logo is shipped free to me in Hawaii ... at last count approx. 100,000 Amazon.com items are so marked. I just checked Amazon for the Edelbrock WP and the 8810 is $198.37 to my door.
BTW, your '72 looks great and is painted in my 2nd favorite color. Guess you can tell which is my 1st.
Your shops should have new or rebuilt.....you need the short pump...I don't recall if you need the by-pass on top...the Airtex pump has the by-pass and a plug if not necessary....this pump will fit a SB 265 to 350 ci engines......the long pump some may mention is for later model SB`s and also was never used for a Corvette
Putting shipping costs aside, why does anybody need a $200 water pump?
As I said before, AD Delco pumps made in foreign country. Rather spend more money to buy an American product. I am sure the AC Delco will work just fine. I don't really think the Edelbrock pump has any special magic. It is simply about supporting our own country when possible.
A lot of the AC delco parts are also made in Mexico. Stewart pumps are also great pumps, made in USA, as I recall, aluminum if you prefer, made for racing applications (more durable tthan stock ones) and about $170. For th extra money, I wouldd go aftermarket for most applications unless you plan on driving the car back and forth to car shows only.
The pump is probably the least of someone's worries when attempting to cool these engines. The flow is more than adequate under all conditions including racing. Aside from cheap rebuilds, reliability is exemplary.
Let's not pretend that the hundreds of millions of pumps GM made are only good to get the car to a show.

That was not the point! USA made gm pumps are fine but a top quality aluminum pump for the extra dollars are often well worth it to folks that are not brainwashed that how a C3 came equipped 40 years ago is as good as it gets.

I have to agree, plus today's engines make far more power than what came in a mid 70's to early 80's C3 so these engines generate more heat and a high quality high flow aluminum pump is a primary component in a well thought out cooling system. My new 355 makes 417 HP and 400 ft/lbs TQ, only the baddest of the big blocks made more power than that.
If price is a factor, Summit racing lists a Stewart water pump 13103 specifically for 71 to 82 corvettes. Price is approx. $90. Stewart has a good name and is used by many racers. This pump has a cast iron body but a proprietary internal design and impeller for an even, high volume flow. Check out Stewart.
FWIW......when I bought my 82 "dd" 2 years ago, the first thing I did was go to Pep Boys and bought a brand new water pump made by Bosch for $37, my co-worker just bought the same pump the other day at Pep Boys for $28 for his 82. Mine works great, no issues at all. I would imagine that pump would fit all small block C3 Corvettes. Another store to check out.....
Tom
I now have 44,000 miles on that new pump...I am happy........
