I wanted to pick up a chrome Alternator, Water Pup, and Master Cylinder from one of the Corvette Mags but my mechanic says they are cheap and I should have the master Cylinder chromed, the Alternator rebuilt with chrome kit and water pump stainless from Edelbrock? Anyone have any comments or ideas on what to do?
My instinct is to second your mechanic's opinion. Even the hallowed Summit Racing is subject to cheap parts. I had ordered a set of chrome big block pullies for a short water pump and the ratios were all wrong. Not only that, but they wouldn't even clear each other. There was over a quarter inch of interference. When I complained to Summit, their reply was to loosen my water pump and bash on it with a mallet to snug it all the way up against the bolts, and tighten it back down. That's their answer to cheap Made-in-Taiwan parts??? It's not even worth it for me to send it back, because of shipping costs!
So be warned about some of those pretty chromed trim pieces that seem so cheap. They are. Pullies aren't even electrical parts, so I thought they were low risk. Think again. And accessory mounts might not even line up with the holes! Cheap alternators that will burn out on you in a few short weeks. I'm very concerned about the garbage that is now being sold by these parts warehouses that we rely on so much. And the garbage advice I received!
You might be better off using your old reliable alternator with a chrome dress up kit that you can install yourself. Also a little bit cheaper.
Get the chrome alternator and waterpump from Springfieldstreedrods.
I got many chrome parts from them and I'm very satisfied with the quality! http://springfieldstreetrods.com/
I got my 100 Watts chrome alternator from them and my chrome high flow water pump!
You can also order your aluminum water pump and intake polished from Edelbrock. Their workmanship was top notch...
Well - I have seen better quality castings than Edelbrock intakes... I think that Holley intakes are much better castings than Edelbrock.
The PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS polished intakes cost on average $100 less than the almost identical Edelbrock products.. I have one of their intakes and the quality is pretty good.
