Default IR gun and block temp

Where's the best place to shoot for the most accurate temp? Shooting randomly around the block gives a big variation in temps.

I am more concerned ober cyl head temps.....

BUT my IR gun is calibrated via my Fluke DVM with temp probe, which is in turn calibrated via TWO HVAC probes.....and ambient on various stats around the house.....good enough for me.....

Shoot it at where the top hose goes onto the thermostat housing or the thermostat housing itself.

Shoot the intake manifold before the thermostat. You want to shoot where there is always coolant .

Using a IR gun varies depending on the D:S ratio of the unit.

eg a D:S ratio of 1:1 means you need to be 1 inch away to measure a 1" dia spot. Then the color of the surface will also change the value of the reading. The ideal color is flat black. So what I do is create a base line at a spot and all future measurments are relative to this reading. When reading water temp the flat black rad hose works well. I compare the upper vs lower hose to see how well the rad is working.

Most of the widely available IR guns are either 8:1 or 12:1, meaning a 1 inch circle at either 8in away or 12in.

A lot of people do not know this and shoot something 6 feet away, not realizing they are "highlighting" a 9in circle (8:1) which obviously would not be very accurate. It's also deceiving because of the laser pointer.

What's a good temp differential on the radiator during the summer?
