OK guys, how do you remove the upper bolts on the firewall for the peddle assembly? They're the ones that are held in place by a couple of metal pieces. Short of bending that metal piece, I can't figure it out....
I know you senior members know the trick! Help is appreciated!
what are you trying to do? if you are switching pedals the plate is the same manual or automatic. it is a pain swapping pedals either way but the plate doesn't have to come out. however you do it others will say your nuts and their way is easier. check it out and see if you can get the pedals to slide out of the bracket easier.
Jim, I just removed my pedal assembly to clean up some rust on it. I didn't have too much trouble except for the upper drivers side nut. I got that one off with a swivel and extension....pretty tough! I don't really know how I will get the nut started to get it back on, we will see.
I am assuming you have removed the steering column and the upper casting? You should be able to remove the four nuts from inside and the four nuts in the cowl. Then slide your brake booster forward about two inches and slide the brake pedal assembly out. It helps to pulls all of your wires and vacuum hoses to one side.
I have to take the peddle assembly out because the pin on the clutch peddle sheared. There are 8 bolts that I removed, 4 from the cowl (no problem there once I found them), 2 below the master cylinder (those were easy, and 2 that also hold the master cylinder to the firewall (manual brakes)....the bolts for those puppies are held in by metal strips that hold the bolts in place. The only way I can figure to get them out would be to try to pry them out and hope that the strips don't bend but before proceeding I thought I'd see if there was a procedure I'm missing. I'll post a pic out here in a bit, my phone is doing an update.
Hey guys, here is the picture of the bolt held in by the strip. I looked at another thread that someone provided me on replacing that pin and the peddle assembly in that photo does not have these strips.
I've done this procedure on my 69. Since I have PB, I didn't have to deal with loose bolts. From your pic, it looks like that bolt is a carriage bolt with the strip holding it in place so that the nut can be installed without the bolt falling into the driver's compartment. I'm guessing that with the 6 bolts removed, those 2 remaining will not allow the assy to be removed. Just bend the strips to allow removal of the bolts. May be the solution.
