I also went with a new hypertech prom. I didn't want to take the chance that my old prom would damage the new ecm. My old prom was installed backwards by the previous owner anyway... Pay GOOD attention to how the prom goes and make sure its right or you might fry them.
Let us know if this fixes you problem....Now I have another problem. Gf's 6 yr daughter did me a favor and threw 2 actuator springs in the trash. Anyone have the 2 inner, longer and narrow springs they'd like to sell ? At least the girl likes being in the shop with me lol.

There are a lot of actuators on the car...which actuator are you talking about??? Headlight ones maybe. If so...they are available.
Yes headlight, suppose I should've proofed my response before posting. I have found several available but can't justify spending 15 on shipping a 2 spring. Was hoping someone would throw a couple in a priority mail envelope..
Autozone has a Cardone 82 ecm for about $97 with a $60 core and free shipping. Just ordered mine. Tired of chasing a code 42 EST. Repair shop that I go to looked up my problem on Identifix (shops subscribe to this) and it described my problem exactly. New ignition module and distributor wiring but still throwing code 42 most likely a bad ecm.
The 84 ecm is a direct plug and play and it logs noticeably faster. I picked a used one with chip up on Ebay for less than 50 bucks and a rebuilt ecm at Advance for $64 to have a spare. The idle improved and driveability seemed to get better.
Back at it. Took a good drive today and she ran pretty good, fixed the vacuum leak in the headlight system, that brought the idle to 700 in P, now what is happening though when put in gear holding the brake the RPM wants to push to 800 and if you put back in park it'll hit 1100 and slowly idle down, SLOWLY. So going into gear making it rise, where would the leak be ? I know the intake isn't leaking or the headlight system. I'm done for the night , will have to check tomorrow and it threw the engine light too so have to check that code. But is there something going to the tranny that is know for vacuum leaks also that would cause this to rise in gear ?

IF The idle came down because a vac leak was resolved you need to check the TBI's for balance and maybe reset the TPS.
I know it's not the tps cause that was checked...I will check the balance on the tbi's. Damn this is kicking my ***, I'm sure it's something simple .. It seemed odd the idle climbed when put in gear and to be honest I know nothing about the 700r tranny but remember reading something about them causing a vacuum leak somewhere. I can't find that post though.

I don't see how 700r4 could cause a vac leak. I set my tps 3 times. Each time it was reading a bit different. Also try blocking off the vacuum to your brake booster. The idle climbing could be coinciding with your foot being on the brakes and a possible leaky brake booster. Had that on a few cars before.

It because in gear it's under load. I don't know of any vac lines that go to the transmission.
I'm going to recheck the tps and makes sense with maybe a leaking booster or line going to it. But with the brake pedal depressed it doesn't raise, it's only when the tranny is shifted into gear . I know nothing about the 700r. I will check all the above this week, check the balance of the throttle bodies and let you know.
before you do much more I would wait till the out side temps are over 75degrees.the computer maybe getting a cold signal .mine will run different on a cold day than on a hot day .
Solved a few problems. After asking about my gear ratios and the RPM's I raised the car and did a quick tire spin , I have the 2.87's still. So why the high RPM ? Lets see, high RPM, high Idle. Checked the RPM's with a timing light, Tach is off. Guess I need to look into a tach board.

I know it's an old thread. I also read that the '84 ecm (with an '84 prom) improved the idle and drivability. That, and that maybe the '84 ecm does not trigger the under hood fresh air solenoid? Any idea? I picked up an '84 ecm and was going to try it out.

Yeah! This thread is dead from old age...Save your money and just buy the EBL Flash II from Dynamic EFI. It will make your 82/84 CFI 100% laptop tunable. It gets better, if it is stock I have a great stock tune BIN file as a starter that works very nicely and give it out for free with every HAM board.

When you post to a thread from 7 years ago and the first thing you type is “I know its an old thread,” thats an indication you should start a new thread.
