My a/c compressor would not turn on and I traced the problem to a small
device under the passenger dash board, behind the glove pouch, attached
to the heater/ac box by one bolt. it turns on the compressor and also the fan. I took it apart and it has a metal top and plastic bottom with three prongs, on the inside it has a electrical points and on top of that has electrical windings it is small about 1 1/2 " long by 3/4" wide by 3/4" thick.
It is made by LittleFuse Inc and has a discontinued GM part number on the metal top 3996204. I tried Dr. rebuild, Ecklers, Zip local auto parts chevy
dealer and no one has it. Can someone figure out where I can get one. 1971 corvette.
Re: can someone identify this electrical a/c device? (spokewrench)
It sounds like a simple relay. Take the part to a local electronics store that actually knows something about what they're selling and they should be able to find something for you. You could also take it to a local Oreilly's or Autozone and do the same.
Re: can someone identify this electrical a/c device? (spokewrench)
Sounds to me like someone rewired the a/c system to work simpler,...in other words, fire off the hi speed blower AND the compressor at the same time....
it's been 'hacked' but from what you describe, not too effectively....
Re: can someone identify this electrical a/c device? (spokewrench)
You could try to file the points inside that relay to see if the compressor turns on. Sometimes the contacts get dirty, or gummed up, and prevent it from working properly.
Littlefuse is still in business, and you may want to contact them to see if they stock it. They may be able to cross the part number, and find a suitable replacement.

I found out that it is only for 71 and 72 vettes, it is called a anti-dieseling
relay, it is supposed to retard timing when the a/c compressor is on and the alternater is under load. But, where can I get a replacement, maybe,
littelfuse?

I've seen these advertised in the latest NCRS "Driveline". I don't want to post the man's name and phone number, but you can either find a copy of issue 146, page 15, or email me and I'll send you the name and number. My email is "WATTAC@WORLDNET.ATT.NET
