Default Steering column trim

The plastic trim just below the steering column ignition assembly is broke beyond repair. I have the assembly notes but was wondering from someone who has been there, how far do I have to disassemble the steering column to replace this part? I am talking only about the plastic trim, not the aluminum "shift housing" under it.

If not for the mounting tabs for the column I could just slide it off of the bottom?

I got into a similar jamb years ago.......I have a black column, and so I split the plastic, covered in vinyl, and slipped it in place, and secured with black tie wraps with tabs down to hide them....other than that, you have a late lamented broken *** over nothing.....

If I remember right, you would have to have the special J tools to pull the shift tube and reinstall it.
