well got tranny out to change clutch due to slipping grinding noise and wouldn't pull at all.Original Muncie 4spd.Gears look good.Input shaft bearing has way too much side play but it is the orig on that original tranny.Trying to make up my mind up to have rebuilt or replace with a new 4spd.I like the 4spd.Not interested in converting to 5spd.Is there a new 4spd that will bolt right in without mods. Also is there any good place to ship this one for a rebuild.Still up for grabs on that one. Also what are the gear ratios in this thing.I have a 336 rear end in it.Thanks for any and all info. Its a 71 by the way.

I just had an m22 built by Paul at 5speeds.com. He uses the autogear new case and of course it bolted right in. Maybe he can rebuild your current transmission. He is a very easy person to deal with, and he really knows his stuff. Give him a call.

Autogear with super case.
I had my original M20 rebuilt by Jody's Transmissions in PA. Nice guy knows what he is doing. Jody is also an authorized Autogear dealer.
Am I missing something here? Why is everyone jumping on the rebuild boat? The way I interpret your post is, all the slipping and grinding noise is due to your worn out clutch. Right?
Side to side play on the input shaft is completely normal when out of the car. The input shaft bearing is only half of what holds the input shaft inline to the main shaft. The other half is the pilot bearing in the crank.
My guess is, if the transmission was functioning fine and all the grinding noise was coming from the the clutch, replace the clutch, reinstall the transmission and call it done.

When I pulled the clutch the fly wheel doesn't look bad.No grooves and no sign of over heating.Disc has a fare amount of material left.I could have sworn the whirling metallic sound was coming from clutch, transmission area.I have a sinking feeling it may be the rear end.I rotate pinion and only one wheel turns. The right side rotates and left one dose not. When I turn left side tire right side dosent turn. All new half shafts and joints.I just had it out not to on ago and put new side yokes in.Teeth looked fine and no metal when I drained it When I put in any gear it did the same thing. It was running and shifting fine.I turned onto the street I live off of and put in 1st to pull into drive way and nothing but a whirling sound.I put in reverse and it will stay on an incline.Thats what through me off.I figured if it was rear end it would wouldn't hold on a hill.
When you rotate the pinion and only one wheel turns could just mean you have an open differential, not limited slip or posi-traction.
Do you feel any binding or crunching when you turn it?
I could be wrong but this almost sounds like a shift linkage problem.
It's definitely a positive traction. It leaves two nice long black marks when you get on it. If I remember right they started coming standard on the 69 or 70 up.I have it on jack stands and noticed the left side yoke is sticking out about 3/4 of an inch and the left is still flush with the differential. I just replaced both with brand new ones about a 1000 miles ago.Even if the clip popped off it would still rotate axle.Just doesn't make sense. As far as shifter Gose. It shifted fine. Its fairly new Hurst shifter.Nothing looked put if place when I pulled it.I could tell it wasn't in neutral. You could feel what I thought was the clutch spinning.I bet all that noise was the drive shift spinning other just wasn't turning the axles . Keep the ideas coming it won't be till next Sunday or Monday that I get back to it.Its a very nice car but the rear hasn't been rebuilt. It's original other than side yokes and new half shafts and joints. This is going to bug me to death Till I figure it out.
why not rebuild it yourself? It's a straightforward job that you can do in a weekend, and replace any worn sliders, gears or syncros for less than $500. when you pull the trans, remove the side cover and check the condition of the visible parts.
Already have. Gears look good.It was shifting smooth till I pulled up at the house and it quit pulling. I'm just wore out.If I can get a good rebuilt one from corvette America or some place else I'm just going that route.O have a lot of time and money in it but I've had it going on 5 year's and don't have time to fool with it anymore. I'm trying to take care of two elderly parents and carry on with my private life and it's getting out of hand.I may be selling it before it's over.It just sits in the garage most of the time.
